Please join us on Saturday, August 24 for STOKEE (Surfing To Offer Kids Environmental Education)! Volunteer to share your love of the ocean, waves and beaches and take an amazing group of kids out surfing at Nahant Beach. This collaboration with Big Brother/Big Sister is our signature event of the summer so be sure to sign up early.
We will start the day with a beach cleanup and some environmental education, then go surfing! We have space for at least 25 volunteers to help on land and in the water, and if you have a surfboard or wetsuit to lend please bring it along. To volunteer, please sign up here.
We're looking for both Water and Land volunteers:
- Water Volunteers: We need to have at least one water volunteer per Big/Little pair! Water volunteers need to be equipped and excited to show the Littles the magic of surfing.
- Land Volunteers: We will also need several volunteers to staff the tent on the beach and handle any logistics issues that arise, including pizza pickup.
The event will take place at Nahant Beach. Look out for the Surfrider flags just past the bathhouse. Here is a map showing the meeting point.
Parking is available along the beach and generally costs 10 USD per vehicle. Parking is free if you have a Mass DCR Parks pass.
Most volunteers will arrive around 9:30 AM and we'll have a beach cleanup and environmental talk starting at 10AM. We'll then aim to get everyone into the water around 11AM. Usually everyone is having so much fun that we need to pull people out of the water in time to wrap up around 1PM. We'll make sure there's plenty of pizza available to keep everyone well fed.
The event will happen rain or shine, unless there are hazardous weather or water conditions like nearby lightning or very high surf.
We need your help to make this awesome event happen! If you're ready to sign up as a volunteer, you can do so here. Or, please feel free to reach out to our treasurer and event coordinator, Mike, if you have any questions.
Looking forward to seeing you out there!
