Lynn Shore Beach Cleanup
Aug 28 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am
Lynn Shore Beach Cleanup
Join the Surfrider Foundation MA Chapter on Saturday, August 28th at 9:30am for a morning beach cleanup along the Lynn Shore!

Surfrider MA is finalizing details for a group cleanup along the Lynn Shores Reservation, with a possible add-on excursion to King’s Beach in Swampscott to make sure we check off 2 more towns for Connecting our Coastline.

We’ll be starting a bit earlier than usual at 9:30AM to make sure the cleanup aligns with low tide.

If you are interested in participating, please pre-register on Eventbrite. The exact meeting location and a waiver will be sent electronically to all registered participants.

Please bring your own reusable work gloves for this cleanup! We’ll still provide sanitized buckets and tools for trash collection, as well as gear for data collection and plenty of hand sanitizer!

Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, please carefully consider the risks of attending. Stay home if you or someone you are in close contact with is in a high-risk group, has recently had any symptoms, or suspects recently being exposed. There are many ways to protect the ocean from home, so please feel free to reach out if you’d like any ideas!

STOKEE 2021 @ Nahant Beach
Sep 19 @ 10:00 am – 1:30 pm
STOKEE 2021 @ Nahant Beach
Join us Sunday, September 19 at Nahant for STOKEE (Surfing To Offer Kids Environmental Education)! Volunteer to share your love of the ocean, waves and beaches and take an amazing group of kids out surfing at Nahant Beach. This collaboration with Big Brother Big Sister is one of our signature events and we’re thrilled to be offering it again this year. We will start the day with a beach cleanup and some environmental education and then go surfing!

We are looking for at least 25 volunteers to help on land and in the water, and if you have a surfboard or wetsuit to lend please bring it along. To volunteer, please sign up here: https://forms.gle/mDuRQuau8WSe1fTi9

Please note that the Surfrider Foundation requires volunteers who will be working with minors to complete a background check.

While masks are not required by law at this time, Surfrider requests that volunteers teaching surfing wear masks during the surfing portion of the event.

Location

Nahant State Beach; look for the Surfrider flags just past the bathhouse. Check out this map: http://pininthemap.com/d36323b960f0f54cb for the exact meeting point.

Parking is along the beach and generally costs 10 USD per vehicle. Parking is free if you have a DCR Parks Pass.

Schedule

  • 9:30:  Volunteers arrive at 9:30 and set up Surfrider sunshade, tables and other gear; prep for beach cleanup and start laying out surfboards and wetsuits
  • 10:00:  The mentor/mentee matches from BBBS will begin arriving at 10; as they arrive Surfrider volunteers will send them off on the beach cleanup with a scavenger hunt checklist of items to find
  • 10:45: We’ll wrap up the beach cleanup and gather the group for a talk on the importance of environmental conservation and some context on how they helped by cleaning up the beach.
  • 11:00:  we’ll do a safety orientation for kids and volunteers before getting folks in the water and assign volunteer:Little pairs
  • 11 – 12:30: surfing!
  • 12:30: we need a volunteer to pick up pizzas from Tide’s restaurant,
  • 1:30: wrap up and clean up; we usually have to peel some of the kids out of the water as they are full of energy and having a great time

Volunteer Opportunities

Water Volunteers: we expect to have at least one water volunteer per match; volunteers will be equipped and excited to show the Littles the magic of surfing.

Land Volunteers: we will have 1 – 2 volunteers to staff the tent on the beach and handle any logistics issues that arise, including pizza pickup

What to Bring

Sun protection, a reusable drinking vessel (there will be water jugs but to uphold the message on conservation we will limit disposable cups), face mask, towel, bathing suit and a wetsuit if you have one.
