The check-in station will be at Lot 1, which is the first lot after entering the refuge.
When volunteers enter the Refuge, they can indicate that they are here for the cleanup and they will be admitted for free. The cleanup will be from 2 PM to 5 PM, and volunteers are welcome to come and go as they wish. After the cleanup, we will have a family-friendly gathering at a local restaurant or brewery (likely Riverwalk Brewing, but stay tuned for final confirmation).
All necessary cleanup supplies will be provided, but it’s a good idea to bring water (in a reusable bottle!) and work gloves that you’d be happy using!

There’s a lot of beach to cover with both the harbor side and sound side, but many hands make light work! Necessary cleanup supplies will be provided, but please come with water in your own (reusable) water bottle and shoes comfortable for walking on the beach. Stay tuned for more details about a reception afterwards where we can continue the conversation about Surfrider and the Cape and how we can increase our impact on the Capes fragile and essential ecosystems!
Parking: There is ample parking in the Kalmus Beach parking lot at no charge in the off season, we suggest parking down by the lifeguard house where we will gather at the beginning and end of the cleanup.
Transportation: For those coming from off Cape without a car accessible, there is a bus station on Hyannis Main Street which the Plymouth & Brockton goes to and from Boston. The bus terminus is about a 30 minute walk north of the beach.

Then please come join us at Carson Beach where we will be working with Dorchester’s Girl Scout Troop 68277 (of Boston Bag Ordinance Fame!) to run a public beach cleanup, trash sort, and data collection. We’ll be following up the cleanup with a guided discussion about what we find and a brainstorming session on different ways that we can stop trash and pollution from getting onto the beach and into the ocean in the first place!
As always, look out for the Surfrider flag to find the exact meetup location. Necessary cleanup supplies will be provided, but it’s a good idea to bring a pair of work gloves that you are comfortable using, as well as some drinking water (in a reusable bottle, please!).
The plan is to meet up by 12 noon for the distribution of cleanup gear and brief safety briefing before starting work.
Parking: There are some metered lots along the beach as well as on-street parking on William J Day Blvd and Colombia Rd (City of Boston meters are free on Sundays, with no time limits enforced).
Public Transit: JFK/UMass Station (10 minute walk) – Red Line, Commuter Rails (Greenbush, Kingston/Plymouth, Middleborough/Lakeville), Buses (5, 8, 16, 41)

We’ll meet outside the Ward Bathhouse. To find us, look for the Surfrider flag. Cleanup supplies, data collection materials, and hot chocolate provided! Please bring a reusable mug if you’ve got one!

Please stay tuned! We’re working on virtual events and remote ways that you can learn and protect the ocean, even while practicing the required social distancing and staying at home as much as possible. Stay safe everyone!
*****
Come to our Spring Beach Cleanup at Nahant Beach, where we’ll be partnering with North Shore Upward Bound!
We’ll meet outside the Ward Bathhouse. To find us, look for the Surfrider flag. We’ll clean the beach and talk about marine debris. Cleanup supplies and data collection materials will be provided.
After that, we’ll finish up the day with a gathering at Bent Water Brewing, which is a family-friendly establishment. We’re very grateful that Bent Water have offered to donate a portion of the sales from each beer sold to the Massachusetts Chapter, which is yet another great reason to enjoy a delicious beverage after helping clean the beach!
Please feel free to bring your own work gloves and reusable water bottle!

Please Note: All participants are REQUIRED to pre-register for this cleanup before the deadline of 8AM on 25 July 2020.
With Massachusetts cautiously reopening, it’s time for the Surfrider Foundation MA Chapter, in collaboration with our friends with Clean Up BOSTON, to carefully get back into the swing of summer beach cleanups with an event at Carson Beach in South Boston!
Of course, even with the local situation having improved in Massachusetts, we are still in the midst of pandemic. This cleanup will take place with extra precautions and some major differences from ‘pre-COVID-19’ cleanups.
We’ve pulled together full details here, which we encourage you to read carefully, but here are some highlights:
- All participants are REQUIRED to pre-register before participating. The deadline for this is 8AM on Saturday 25 July 2020.
- Start times for participants will be staggered to limit density at the meeting site. Please pick an open time slot that works for you when you register.
- All participants will be required to wear a face covering during the event and guidance is in place to help maintain 6ft physical distancing.
- Please carefully consider the risks of attending. Stay home if you or someone you are in close contact with is in a high-risk group, has recently had any symptoms, or suspects recently being exposed. There are many way to protect the ocean from home and please feel free to reach out if you’d like any ideas!
- Please bring your own work gloves, face covering, and food/drink for this cleanup.
- We’ll still provide sanitized buckets and tongs for trash collection, as well as gear for data collection and plenty of hand sanitizer.
- We’ll be skipping the group briefing and debrief. Instead, please make sure you read the event details carefully before attending!
We sincerely thank you for your help and cooperation, especially during these times, and thank you for your interest in protecting and enjoying the ocean! Please feel free to reach out with any questions. We’re looking forward to seeing some of you at the beach!

Instead of an in person Snowrider event this year, we will be hosting a virtual screening of Protect our Winter’s “Purple Mountains“, a tale of professional snowboarder and mountaineer Jeremy Jones’ journey to find common ground in the mountains — one voter at a time.
If the spirit moves you, please join us for the film screening decked out in your finest outdoor mountain gear! We’d love your help sharing the Snowrider message that “What starts up in the mountains, eventually ends up in the ocean“.

All participants are required to preregister for this cleanup before June 8th. Capacity is limited, so save your spot today.
This event is part of a summer series of cleanups around the US, organized in partnership with our friends at Everlane. We’re excited to work with a brand that has committed themselves to eliminating all virgin plastics from their supply chain in 2021 and seeks to become 100% landfill-free. More details about Everlane’s sustainability efforts can be found at: https://www.everlane.com/sustainability
Time and Place: Starting at 11:30AM on 8 June 2021, come find us along the Harborwalk in Boston’s Seaport. Look out for the Surfrider MA flag along the water near the Harborwalk Playground (behind 22 Liberty Drive) and the Harborwalk Lookout Terrace (25 Fan Pier Boulevard). This map shows the approximate location.
Public Transit: The meeting location is an 0.2 mile walk (~5 min) from Courthouse Station on the MBTA Silver Line (SL1, SL2, or SL3). There is also a nearby stop at Sleeper Street and Seaport Blvd for the #4 Bus.
Parking: While there is some car parking available nearby, remember that on-street metered parking in Boston is usually quite limited and garages can be very pricey. Please do consider if public transit is an option that can work for you.
Although the pandemic situation in Massachusetts is trending in the right direction, we will still be following several protocols during this event:

There are many ways to protect the ocean from home, so please feel free to reach out if you’d like any ideas!
- Please bring your own work gloves, face covering, and food/drink for this cleanup.
- We’ll still provide sanitized buckets and tools for trash collection, as well as gear for data collection and plenty of hand sanitizer.
