S.T.O.K.E.E. 2012

Author: Surfrider MA

Another AMAZING year with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Mass Bay, Brickhouse Boards, the US Coast Guard and Surfrider MA. We taught kids to surf, had some quality ocean education time and plenty of time for the volunteers to play, too. Thanks to everyone who made it out to this fun event!

Check out what a couple of the Big Brothers sent us in the week following S.T.O.K.E.E.:

I just wanted to send a quick note to say “Thanks!” for the Surfrider event with BBBSMB this past Sunday at Nahant Beach. My Little Brother had a blast this year, as he did last year. He was asking me about this event back in June, so I know he had a great time last year as well. I appreciate all the planning and work and time that went into the event. Please tell all the others as well. Everyone in the organization was so nice. Thanks!
~ Halong

Hi. Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the event this weekend. I’ve been matched for three years and my little and I both agreed that the Surfrider event was THE BEST we’ve ever been to! Thanks so much for taking the time and making our weekend!

HUGE thanks to everyone who helped organize this day and to all of the volunteers who made it out to clean up and spend the day at the beach. We had gorgeous weather and a great crew of volunteers of all ages.

We found about 15 bags worth of plastic, glass, cigarette butts and other debris. During the clean up we also piqued the interest of many beachgoers who were interested in learning about the Surfrider Organization. There was an amazing after-party at Cape Ann Brewing Company!

In short, World Oceans Day at the New England Aquarium was awesome. Just like in 2011, the event was well attended and the kids (tons of them!!!) were eager to see what we were promoting: Caring for our oceans and earth by reducing our plastic footprint, recycling, conserving water, tending to the earth, volunteering and the general importance of living sustainably.

We engaged the kids (and adults!) in a game that we created last year for this event. It was a perfect way to get the key points across. It was a lot of work to keep it moving all day and to match the energy of the awesome kids that we had at our booth but our fearless volunteers shined bright!

Extra special thanks to Mike M., Mary B., Courtney H. and Jon W. for their huge volunteer effort on Sunday.

About International Surfing Day

International Surfing Day sprung from the idea that it would be great to have an annual day to celebrate surfing, while giving thanks and appreciation to our oceans, waves and beaches. From there, the first International Surfing Day began with one international and 16 domestic events. It has grown to more than 90 domestic events and 71 International spanning more than 30 countries across the globe. The day is not only filled with fun surf sessions and paddle-outs, but encourages people everywhere, no matter where they live, to give back through various activations organized by the Surfrider Foundation.

2012 marks the eighth anniversary of International Surfing Day. This year there are more than 200 individual International Surfing Day celebration events taking place globally.

Note: International Surfing Day officially takes place on Wednesday, June 20th but we will be having OUR celebration on June 23rd!

There are so many good things happening around here this year. Whether you feel like spending time cleaning the beach or want to become more involved, there is something for everyone. Have a look below at what is going on through November and stop by Russell House Tavern on June 6th where we will be celebrating the season and talking Surfrider along with Ceto Surf. Bring a crew!

Download a PDF of our events through November!

Special thanks to Nantasket Beach Management Commission for an amazing job organizing this event and to all of our Surfrider MA volunteers who made it out!

We hope to see you at our next chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 2nd 2012 where we will be talking about upcoming events, ongoing campaigns and volunteer opportunities. There will also be a guest speaker or two, so be sure not to miss this one!
